Shortmail – email, simplified

Are you fed up with email?  Do you spend way too much time sifting through mountains of spam and other endless messages created by machines?  Would you rather use email to communicate with your friends, family, and other actual people?  Shortmail.com is a simplified and length-limited email system that is set up to discourage spam, promotional, and machine created messages, while encouraging real human interaction.  According to Shortmail:

Email has become a big part of our lives.  It’s the common denominator of the Internet.  It dictates much of our workflow routine.  And for many, it’s completely overwhelming.  Think about it: do you know anyone who has a happy relationship with email?  We believe it’s time for a new design for email, and we have set out to work towards that goal with Shortmail…  Shortmail is totally new – redesigned from the ground up – and gives you an email identity where relationships are magically better…  As the name implies, Shortmail is email – only shorter.  We’ve applied the idea of length-limitation to email…  We know that people are becoming more accustomed to length-limited communications: Twitter and SMS messaging demonstrate that…  Shortmail works best when corresponding with people (as opposed to marketers or machines).  And because you’re communicating with people, we can organize your email experience around them.  Rather than focus on messages or threads, we organize your inbox in a way that makes it easy to respond to people.  Letting you focus on conversations with people lowers cognitive load and makes it easier for you to maintain better relationships; by contrast, conventional email imposes cognitive load and is corrosive to relationships.

You can sign in to your new Shortmail account through Twitter and your Twitter name is used for your Shortmail address.  Shortmail simplifies email by limiting each message to 500 characters and by eliminating attachments, junk mail, and folders.  There are apps for Android and iPhone for easy email on the go.  Shortmail also has a blog.

DMAchoice – a mail preference service

Are you tired of receiving piles of junk mail in your mailbox and mountains of spam in your email?  Do you wish you could stop all the junk but still get the promotions that interest you?  DMAchoice.org is a service covering both direct mail and email, that allows you to sign up to receive only the promotional mail that you want to receive.  According to DMAchoice:

DMAchoice™ is an online tool developed by the Direct Marketing Association to help you manage your mail.  This site is part of a larger program designed to respond to consumers’ concerns over the amount of mail they receive…  Each year, direct marketing generates more than $2 trillion in sales and charitable donations in the United States alone.  But we know that for direct marketing to remain successful, marketers must maintain a healthy relationship with consumers.  That healthy relationship starts by giving you the opportunity to tell us what your mail preferences are—and then requiring our members to respect those choices.

You can request to stop or start receiving mail from individual companies or entire categories which includes: Credit Offers, Catalogs, Magazine Offers and Other Mail Offers.  There are also do not contact lists for deceased and caregivers.  DMAchoice also includes a series of consumer guides.

Ever wanted to sign up for any kind of online service or community without providing your real email address, for example because you don’t want to get spammed?  tempalias helps you out by providing temporary, anonymous email addresses, also called “aliases”.  Any message sent to the tempalias address will be forwarded anonymously to your real email address…  Unlike other, similar services out there, tempalias doesn’t require you to create an account or provide any personal information (other than your real email address, of course).  Also, the service is completely cost and advertisement free.

Temporary anonymous email addresses can be set to remain valid for a specific number of days or a specific number of received messages, after-which the address will be automatically deleted.  Tempalias has a bookmarklet that works with most web browsers and an extension for Google Chrome.
