Internet Privacy and Security Update:

There is currently a bill in United States Congress which threatens online privacy and the security of the web itself.  CISPA (Cyber Intelligence Sharing and Protect Act) is a very similar bill to the infamous SOPA but with even worse online privacy implications.

CISPA passed the House on April 26 and is expected to be voted on in the Senate sometime between May 28 and June 1.  We urge all of our readers who live in the United States to please contact their senators in opposition to CISPA right away.

You can learn more about CISPA on the Cheezburger Network’s Know Your Meme:

Fight for the Future and some other advocacy groups have set up a dedicated website called Privacy is Awesome to help you contact your Senators:

You can also contact you Senators through Demand Progress or the Electronic Frontier Foundation:

The interwebs go on strike!

Programing note: There will not be a Website of the Day post on Wednesday, January 18.

Waste More Time Online is joining the internet blackout to protest the internet censorship bills SOPA and PIPA.  Some of the websites participating in the blackout include: Google, Wikipedia, icanhazcheezburger network sites, reddit, Mozilla, WordPress, and many more.  The U.S. Senate votes on PIPA on January the 24th.  You can find more information about the strike at http://sopastrike.com/ and you can find more information about SOPA and PIPA at http://americancensorship.org/.

Waste More Time Online will be back up on Thursday the 19th with a new Website of the Day.

Stop PIPA, SOPA, and Internet Censorship

Rather then featuring a Website of the Day today’s post will be a little different.  We try to avoid politics at all cost here at Waste More Time Online.  It’s not what we’re about and most of us hate politics.  But today we must make an exception.  What we are all about here is a celebration of how wonderful, interesting, and diverse the internet is.

There are currently two bills in the United States Congress which threaten online free speech and internet security.  If passed they would change the very structure of the internet as we know it.  We urge all of our readers who live in the United States to write to your senators and representatives in congress, and urge them to oppose the Stop Online Piracy Act or SOPA (U.S. House bill) and the PROTECT IP Act or PIPA (U.S. Senate bill).

FightForTheFuture.org summerises PIPA nicely in the following video:

Senator Ron Wyden from the great state of Oregon has promised to filibuster if PIPA comes up for a vote in the Senate.  By filling out a quick form at StopCensorship.org you can have your name read on the Senate floor by Senator Wyden during his filibuster should it occur.

At Whitehouse.gov/petitions you can sign a petition in opposition that will be sent directly to the Obama Administration.

Update (1/18/2012) – Here are two more ways you can take action:

At http://voteforthenet.com/ you can sign a pledge letting your legislators know that you will vote against anyone who votes for SOPA or PIPA.

At http://act.demandprogress.org/sign/veto_sopa/ you can sign a petition to ask President Obama to veto SOPA and PIPA should they pass. President Obama has expressed concerns about the bills, but hasn’t pledged to veto them.
